A Graduate Students’ Guide: HKN Pathways 2025 Conference Recap

By March 17, 2025 No Comments

In February, HKN’s Graduate Student Subcommittee participated in the IEEE-HKN Pathways to Industry virtual conference. The experience was fulfilling and enriching for both the attendees and Committee members. Here is a round-up of the activities that took place this year:

“Ask Me Anything” During Networking
On Day Two of the conference, we hosted a table during the networking hour where attendees could stop by and “Ask Me Anything.” We covered essential topics such as effective strategies for managing degree requirements, optimizing the job search process, and leveraging a graduate degree for career growth. Key discussions also focused on career transitions, job satisfaction, workplace mobility, and achieving a healthy balance between family and professional life.

Grad Student Resume Review
The Resume Review Networking Session was designed to support both current and prospective graduate students in enhancing their professional profiles. The event attracted students eager to refine their LinkedIn profiles and gain insights into the offerings of the HKN Graduate Student Subcommittee. Graduate student resumes are often extensive and vary in format, which can sometimes hinder their effectiveness. During the session, participants received valuable guidance on structuring their resumes to highlight key achievements and skills, along with practical tips for enhancing their online portfolio and professional presence. Students were provided with actionable strategies to present themselves confidently and effectively in the competitive job market.

Panel Session: “Transition from an Undergraduate/Graduate to a Young Professional: The Essentials”
On Day Three of the conference, we hosted a panel discussion titled “Transition from an Undergraduate/Graduate to a Young Professional: The Essentials.” Led by Subcommittee member, Ryn Morris, this session featured a distinguished panel of recent graduates who have successfully transitioned into the industry. The panelists shared their personal experiences, providing valuable insights into key aspects of this transition, including but not limited to:

  • The early months in a new professional role
  • Developing essential skills for career growth
  • Effective time management strategies
  • Adapting to workplace culture and expectations
  • The role of mentorship in a successful transition (including details about HKN’s own Grad Student Mentoring Initiative)

Thank you to the attendees for your active participation and thoughtful questions. We hope you left feeling equipped with practical advice and strategies to navigate the transition from academia to the professional world!
