Nominations can be submitted at any time; all nominations received by November 30 will be evaluated for that year, with recognized advisors announced the following spring. Those recognized will be permanently highlighted on the Advisors of Distinction page, receive a certificate and gift, and be publicly announced through multiple venues.
Purpose of Recognition
This recognition is to honor those chapter advisors who have guided outstanding programs of chapter activities over an extended period. The recognition affirms the role of chapter advisors in mentoring chapter leaders, in maintaining effective chapter operations, in impacting others through Eta Kappa Nu programs, and in promoting Eta Kappa Nu in their campus community. Distinguished chapter advisors so recognized demonstrate excellence in extracurricular interactions with students. Such advisors will be permanently added to the IEEE-HKN Advisors of Distinction list.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, chapter advisors (which can include faculty, professional, or other) must:
- have served as advisor for the nominating chapter for at least six (6) full years (years need not be concurrent) and
- during the years as advisor, the chapter must have been recognized as a Key Chapter at least four (4) of those years.

Nominating an Advisor for this Recognition
Only a current chapter President can nominate an advisor of their chapter. The nomination is a simple three-step process:
- The chapter President fills out the nomination form.
- The completed form is automatically emailed to the nominating chapter President, who must forward the form to the Department Chair (or equivalent) for endorsement (note if the nominee is currently serving as Chair, then forward to the Dean)
- The Chair (or appropriate endorser) forwards the email to bentley@ieee.org, certifying to the best of their knowledge that the information submitted is correct and that they endorse the nomination.
The Recognition Sub-Committee will verify whether or not the nomination is complete and accurate. Once a nominee is determined to be eligible for recognition, the committee will ask for the following material for the recognition page: headshot, chapter of original induction, type of advisor (faculty, professional, etc.), and ~100-word bio.
Note that the Advisors of Distinction is much like a “hall of fame” for HKN advisors, so once recognized, they are recognized forever on the page; much like HKN membership, this recognition is for life. The page highlights them with the following:
- Headshot
- Chapter in which they were inducted
- Citation (example shown here): For Contributions as [Faculty/Professional/etc.] Advisor at the [Insert Chapter] Chapter at [insert Institution]
- ~100-Word Biography
- Year received recognition
