IEEE Eta Kappa Nu

IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu has expanded its reach in Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, Africa) by installing the Nu Tau Chapter at SMU – South Mediterranean University in Tunis! Welcome to the HKN family, Nu Tau Chapter!

This was the very first IEEE-HKN Chapter in Tunisia and only the fourth on the African continent. IEEE-HKN Regions 7 – 10 Governor Matteo Alasio presided over the installation on 7 February 2026 where 10 students and one professional member took the oath to uphold HKN’s tenets of Scholarship, Character, and Attitude.

For the students of MedTech, induction into HKN is a recognition of service and academic rigor. Corresponding Secretary Malek Mimouna highlighted the weight of this new responsibility:

“IEEE-HKN is not a club. It is an exclusive recognition reserved for the top students… We are not just members. We are building a legacy.”

This sentiment of “legacy” was felt throughout the night. By establishing this Chapter, these students are opening doors for future generations of Tunisian engineers to connect with industry leaders, researchers, and changemakers worldwide.

Nu Tau Chapter is already off to quite a strong start! Just one week after the installation, the Chapter had two teams participate in the university’s AI Minds Hackathon, where teams were challenged to build a cognitive AI assistant capable of transforming multimodal personal data into a structured, searchable memory, all while running locally hosted open-source models under strict constraints. The two HKN teams took home first and second place!
