IEEE Eta Kappa Nu

PISCATAWAY, NJ – IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN), the honor society of IEEE, is proud to announce the approval of 30 university chapters as recipients of the 2024-2025 Outstanding Chapter Award (OCA). This prestigious award, recognizing excellence in chapter activity and service, will be formally presented during the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) Annual Meeting on 21 March 2026, in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.

The Outstanding Chapter Award is designed to recognize the top ~10% of IEEE-HKN chapters worldwide for their exceptional performance between 1 July 2024, and 30 June 2025. This year’s selection process was highly competitive from the 280 IEEE-HKN chapters from around the world. To be eligible, chapters were required to submit their reports by the 31 July 2025 deadline and maintain active status in accordance with IEEE-HKN Operations and Process manuals.

“These chapters represent the pinnacle of student leadership and academic excellence within our global community,” said Nancy Ostin, Director of IEEE-HKN. “By focusing on service, professional development, and community growth, these students are not only improving their local universities but are also shaping the future of the electrical and computer engineering professions.”

A Rigorous Selection Process
The Chapter and Ritual Committee’s OCA subcommittee utilized a data-driven ranking system to evaluate eligible chapters. The criteria included:

  • Service & Activity: Weighted heavily on service hours per person (30%) and overall activity hours.
  • Growth & Sustainability: Evaluation of chapter membership growth and long-term viability.
  • Engagement: Total number of individuals inducted, and the variety of activities reported.
  • Special Recognition: Bonus points were awarded for active participation in society-wide events and programs.

Following the quantitative ranking, the subcommittee performed a qualitative review of the activity reports and narrative responses to ensure that the final 30 recipients demonstrated the highest standards of the HKN ideals: Scholarship, Character, and Attitude.
