Neil Furman, a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alabama, was the 2026 winner of the IEEE-HKN Best Paper Award presented on 14 March 2026 for his paper entitled, “Design, Fabrication, and Performance of a Multi-Layer Thermal Plant with Digital Control for Precision Timing Research and Development.” The IEEE-HKN Best Student Paper Award is presented annually at the Region 3 Technical Conference, SoutheastCon. The 2026 conference was held in Huntsville, Alabama with the theme “Engineering the Future: Power, AI, and Sustainability.” To qualify for the award, the primary and presenting author must be a student. Each author presented their paper to a panel of judges. Of the papers submitted, three finalists were selected with Furman being named the award recipient. For his achievement, Furman will receive a check for $500. The IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu Best Student Paper Award was established by a generous donation by Dr. Hulya Kirkici and the IEEE Power Modulator Conference. Congratulations, Neil!
