The IEEE-HKN Awards Committee is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s awards:
Sir Bashir M. Al-Hashimi, ARM Professor of Computer Engineering, Vice President (Research & Innovation), Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences, King’s College London, Strand was named the recipient of the Asad M. Madni Outstanding Technical Achievement and Excellence Award. Sir Al-Hashimi received the award, “For his seminal contributions and technology transfer in semiconductor manufacturing test and energy-efficient computing with worldwide impact and for outstanding university leadership advancing engineering and entrepreneurship.” The Asad M. Madni Award was established in 2019 to recognize a practitioner for distinguishing himself or herself through an invention, development, discovery, or innovation in electrical or computer sciences, engineering, or technology, with worldwide impact.
Thomas K. Gaylord, Regents Professor, Georgia Institute of Technology will be this year’s recipient of the IEEE-HKN Distinguished Service Award “for his 46 years of dedicated service as faculty advisor to the Beta Mu chapter.” The Distinguished Service Award created in 1971 to recognize those members who have devoted years of service to Eta Kappa Nu (or IEEE-HKN), resulting in significant benefits to all the society’s members. The award is based on lifetime contributions to Eta Kappa Nu (or IEEE-HKN) and is limited to one recipient each year.
Dr. Kara Bocan, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – University of Pittsburgh is the recipient of the IEEE-HKN C. Holmes MacDonald Outstanding Teaching Award “For her contributions to bring all aspects of software engineering to ECE curriculum and her strong and comprehensive support of students” The establishment of this award in 1972 recognized the crucial role college professors play in training and motivating future electrical and computer engineers. The award acknowledges engineering professors who, early in their careers, have demonstrated special dedication and creativity in their teaching.
Ana Inês Silva Inácio, RF Analog IC designer at TNO, The Netherlands, RF Analog IC designer at TNO, The Netherlands was named as the winner of the Outstanding Young Professional Award, “For outstanding leadership in IEEE Young Professionals, fostering innovation and inclusivity, and for pioneering advancements in RF sensor systems, bridging technical excellence with impactful community engagement.” The Outstanding Young Professional (OYP) Award, formerly the Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer (OYEE) Award, has been presented annually since 1936. It is presented to exceptional young engineers who have demonstrated significant accomplishments in their career.
The IEEE-HKN Awards will be presented at the IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) Awards Presentation Ceremony on Friday, 22 November 2025, during the IEEE Meeting Series in New York, NY, USA.
Lun-De Liao, Associate Principal Investigator and Deputy Director, Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Nanomedicine, National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan is the inaugural winner of the Frank and Shelly Chang Outstanding Young Scholar Award, “For his ground-breaking work in biomedical engineering from fundamental discovery to population-scale benefits and his community leadership” The Frank and Shelley Chang Outstanding Young Scholar Award was established in 2025. It is presented to exceptional young engineers working in Region 10 for less than 15 years post-graduation who have demonstrated significant accomplishments in their career. Liao will be receiving his award at an upcoming event in Region 10.
